In 2017 Feilden+Mawson were commissioned by Cadogan Estates to restore the Rossetti Studios, Grade II Listed purpose-built artist studios in the heart of Chelsea. The purpose of the refurbishment was to enhance architectural and historic details, whilst renewing the services to meet the requirements of 21st century artists.
Detailed conservation work was required for the existing original features, including the terrazzo and timber parquet flooring throughout. Other period features including cornices, skirtings and chimney pieces were revealed and expressed following the removal of progressive layers of services installations. The roof slate and leadwork were fully renewed using traditional building techniques, whilst enhancing the thermal envelope and realising energy efficiencies. Kitchenettes, showers, and utility areas were also upgraded to a contemporary standard and championed by Feilden+Mawson’s own Interior Design team.
Replacing a dilapidated later addition to the rear of the building, a completely new build studio was also added. This was designed in form and material to be sympathetic to the existing building and to improve the setting of this rare and historically sensitive property. Rossetti Studios is a shining example of how good design and respect for a building’s history and story, can breathe new life into it.
