‘Medieval Monday’: Concept Design

This summer, Feilden+Mawson and Norwich Castle are reflecting on the journey of the recently reopened Percival building. The opening of the new atrium at Norwich Castle marks the completion of the first phase of the £18m project Royal Palace Reborn supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players.

This element of the project looked at a mid-century intervention into a largely Victorian addition to the Norman Castle.

Our interventions looked to cause minimal damage to the highest priority elements of the historic building fabric and add improved and impactful visitor facilities including Café, Shop and Education space.

This week we are exploring the initial concept design.

These images illustrate how the idea developed for the basic elements of opening-up the space to allow for maximum natural light, all-new visibility of the East face of the Keep and stronger connection to the Museum Rotunda.
